Preparing for ‘Big School’

Starting school is an exciting milestone, but school readiness is about much more than your little one recognising letters, writing their name or counting to ten. These are important skills, and we are proud that our children leave Pendley Day Nursery with a strong foundation in early literacy and numeracy, alongside the confidence and independence they need for the next stage of their journey.

We know that preparing children for school is about much more than what they know; it’s also about how they feel. Through play, exploration, relationships and everyday experiences, we help children develop the confidence, curiosity and independence they need for this next step.

Becoming confident and independent

Nursery life provides many opportunities for children to practise independence in a supportive environment, whether that’s putting on their coat, choosing activities, helping to tidy up or completing small tasks themselves.

Starting school means that children need to do more for themselves, from managing their belongings to making choices and asking for help when they need it. Developing these skills early helps children feel more confident as they adapt to new routines and experiences.

Children also learn how to manage emotions, cope with change and develop resilience through everyday interactions and experiences. Being able to express how they feel, try something new and persevere when something is challenging are all important parts of becoming ready for school.

Building relationships and a love of learning

Another important area children develop here at nursery before starting school is their ability to communicate, listen and interact with others.

Through play, conversations, stories and group activities, children learn how to share, take turns, solve problems and build friendships. These social skills will help them feel comfortable in a classroom environment and develop positive relationships with both teachers and other children.

Curiosity and a willingness to learn are also key parts of school readiness. Whether children are exploring the outdoors, creating something new, asking questions or discovering how things work, these experiences all help develop confidence and a positive attitude towards learning.
